The Logbook

The Logbook records your voyages: while under way, Thoosa notes a fix at a regular interval with every value available at that moment — position, course, speeds, depth, wind, pressure, batteries, engines… automatically, according to what your source provides. This page explains how to start a voyage, tune the recording and print the log.

Starting a voyage

1. Open the Logbook section.
2. Tap New voyage and give it a name.
3. Sail: Thoosa records fixes automatically until you end the voyage.

While recording, a side pane keeps the live journal one tap away from any section.

Automatic entries

Between fixes, Thoosa logs the notable events on its own:

• received AIS and DSC messages — distress included, along with the weather notices broadcast over AIS;
• GMDSS bulletins, as soon as they are downloaded;
• engine and battery alarms;
• anchor up, anchor down and arrival.

Annotating the log

Add a timestamped comment at any moment. The composer offers ready-made categories: VHF communication, Sea state, Visibility, Sail configuration, Anchoring, Man overboard, Watch change, Incident or damage, or a free Observation.

• Dictate rather than type — use voice recognition (the microphone button) to enter the comment by voice.
• Attach images — take a photo with the camera, pick one from your photo library, or attach any file.

Tuning the recording

• Fix frequency — Settings ▸ Logbook ▸ Sampling interval: every 30 minutes, hourly, or every two hours.
• Distance column — the Distance run setting chooses whether it follows the water log or the GPS position.

Preparing the printed log

Set the boat name and skipper under Settings ▸ Logbook: they appear at the head of the printed log.

Printing or exporting a PDF

On Mac:

1. Open the voyage to print.
2. Choose File ▸ Print… (⌘P), or tap the printer button in the toolbar.
3. Print, or choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.

On iPhone and iPad:

1. Open the voyage, then tap the printer button in the toolbar — or, from the voyage list, touch and hold a voyage and choose Print….
2. Print to an AirPrint printer, or tap the print dialog's Share button to save the log as a PDF in Files.
